Are you new ’round these parts? Here’s a bit of background you might want to know..
I started this blog in the fall of 2010 to share the marvels, miracles, and mishaps of family life abroad. I called the charming German town of Freiburg home for four years while my husband completed his post-doc and my three boys ran wild.
My husband (Doc Sci) earned his PhD in the spring of 2010, but he’s still trying to figure out what he wants to be when he grows up. He’s currently teaching at a university where we now live in Arizona.
Alpha (formerly known as T-Rex) is seven years old. He loves soccer, Star Wars, Lego, Nerf guns, and being the boss. Bravo (formerly known as Screech) is five years old. He is seriously obsessed with trains, planes, space ships, and riding his bike. Charlie (formerly known as Big Foot) made his mark on German soil in August of 2012, and he seems to be the most particular and most hilarious one of the bunch.
And me? Well, I am the main writer here at Thrifty Travel Mama, a saver in order to spend on seeing the world. I love photos filled with beauty, fascinating places, delicious food, and organized spaces. Oh right… and stamps in my passport, of course!
Our expat adventure in Germany was my second (I lived in Russia in 2003), but the first with a husband and children. We were privileged to have visited so many fascinating places while we lived abroad. You can read about them by clicking on the Where We’ve Been tab above.
Now that we’re back in the US, things are different. Exotic destinations are further away and more expensive to reach. Reverse culture shock is frightful, a foe not to be underestimated. I will be chronicling my personal experience with it as well as continuing to document our travels and how we afford them – because you know we’ll never stop exploring.
Here at Thrifty Travel Mama, we believe…
